Don’t miss to visit… Alghero surroundings

The town of Alghero especially the Old Town, is an attractive place to visit in itself but it provides also easy access to a number of destinations in north west Sardinia that are ideal for day trips: the fascinating Alghero surroundings!

What’s more the variety of excursions on offer is impressive.

For example the spectacular sea caves of Grotta di Nettuno located at Capo Caccia (literally meaning head hunter, a ‘sleeping giant’ rock).
Bosa, Stintino and Argentiera are interesting places to visit for very different reasons.

Bosa is a quiet provincal town crossed by the river Temo which has got a beautiful historic center. It is situated on the banks of the River Temo, 45 minutes drive from Alghero. This relaxing town enjoys nice beaches on the sea and spectacular ancient houses on the river, besides an interesting historic center.

Stintino acts as gateway to one of the most famous and beautiful beaches in Sardinia, La Pelosa.  Stintino, at the extreme north west of Sardinia, about one hour drive from Alghero, is a small resort town (from which to leave for a boat day trip to Asinara island) and the beach at La Pelosa. With its fine white sand and warm shallow turquoise waters that stretch across the short strait to the Island of Piana, La Pelosa ranks as one of the most popular beaches in Sardinia.

Neptune’s Grotto is one of the most popular excursions from Alghero. This spectacular series of connected sea caves and underground lakes with stalagtites and stalagmites are located underneath the Capo Caccia promontory. It can be reached either by car (going down about 600 steps among cliffs )or by boat trip from the port of Alghero.

Argentiera is an abandoned mine on the sea hosted a silver mine in Sardinia since Roman times. Closed down in 1963, little has changed to this day and the old mine buildings create an eerie atmosphere of decay. Today the town hists curious tourists and those in search of the fine beaches and crystal clear waters of the area.

The archaeological site of Nuraghe di Palmavera is one of the most important Nuragic area i Sardinia. Situated 10 km from Alghero, the centre of the site is dominated by the ruins of a palace which is surrounded by the remains of fifty circular dwellings. Anghelu Ruju is the oldest prehistoric site near Alghero and dates back to the Ozieri Culture of the Late Neolithic (3300 BC). The excavations are conveniently set just outside the airport at Fertilia and consist of a necropolis made up of thirty seven burial tombs.
